Tosca is in love with Cavaradossi, an artist and sympathizer of Angelotti. Scarpia, the chief of police, wants only two things: to recapture the escaped prisoner Angelotti and to seduce Tosca, an opera singer of incredible voice and beauty.

In another scene, destroyed buildings with jagged walls convey the war-like state in a world ruled by tyrants. Tosca is Giacomo Puccini’s gripping drama filled with torture, treachery, lust, execution and suicide. This makes the characters in this production a bit more human, more relatable.Īuthenticity and closeness were also chosen for the scenography of the play: Highly elaborate imitation brickwork THE WALL BRICK was used to recreate sacred spaces, such as the Roman church of Sant'Andrea Della Valle. Soprano Latonia Moore about her role: "This is not Floria Tosca on stage, it's her in her real life." This is something that she (although she describes herself as a traditionalist) has missed in other productions. In addition to the heart of the plot, the love triangle, current socio-political as well as historical aspects are addressed: how does one live in an occupied country, what about the freedom of the artist and how do men in positions of power also appropriate power over women.

David Bobée's production of "Tosca" at the Opéra de Rouen Normandie stands for the closeness and authenticity of the characters and thus strikes a chord with contemporary society.
